What is Metabolic Training?

One of the fitness terms you hear a lot these days is “Metabolic Training”.

Listening to some of the hype surrounding this term you would think it was some sort of fat loss “cure all” sent from above.

The truth is “Metabolic Training” is simply when a series of exercises are performed back to back with little to no rest in between.

This is typically done using bodyweight exercises or compound lifts using light to moderate weights and relatively high reps.

Another way to describe this would be- “cardio with weights”.

This really is nothing new and I can recall performing this type of workout back in the 90’s but then we called it “circuit training”.

If you were to believe some of the sales pitches found all over the Internet you would think that “Metabolic Training” was the ONLY exercise needed to burn fat and build muscle.

Don’t believe everything you read (especially on the ‘net).

Metabolic Training has its place BUT it should NEVER be used to replace your strength training workouts.

In fact, this is one of the biggest mistakes people make when cutting calories to lose fat- they completely abandon resistance training in favour of metabolic style workouts and then wonder why they end up looking skinny and scrawny instead of lean and strong.

(By the way, I think this is why I rarely see any great bodies in the gym anymore- men and women everywhere have forgotten how important it is to lose fat and not muscle!)

A much better approach is to incorporate 1-2 “Metabolic Training” sessions per week along with your normal strength training sessions.

Doing so will afford you the high calorie burning benefits of your metabolic workouts together with the muscle preserving strength training sessions.

And perhaps most important of all is this- if you aren’t losing fat fast enough the first area to scrutinize is your diet. It doesn’t matter how hard you can train- if your diet sucks then no amount of “Metabolic Training” will get you the results you are looking for.
