The Vitamin For Faster Weight Loss

Too much of a good thing?

Do you miss the summer?

With the shorter days and cold weather here I am sure missing the sun.

Sun exposure is often demonized by the media but our bodies truly benefit from some exposure to the sun and the Vitamin D it provides.

In fact, scientists have now established a link between weight loss and Vitamin D.

Shalamar Sibley, MD, and assistant professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota says that “Vitamin D deficiency is associated with obesity, but it is not clear if inadequate vitamin D causes obesity or the other way around.”

In this published study, researchers looked to establish a relationship between levels of Vitamin D, calorie restriction and weight loss. The study involved a group of 38 overweight women and men who were assigned a reduced calorie diet for 11 weeks.

All subjects had their Vitamin D levels tested before beginning the diet and all were found to be in the insufficient range. Researchers examining these results discovered that they could predict weight loss results based upon these pre-diet Vitamin D levels alone.

When Vitamin D supplementation was introduced researchers discovered that for every increase of 1 ng/mL of Vitamin D subjects lost between ¼ and ½ pound more than those not taking Vitamin D.

In addition, these higher levels of Vitamin D also resulted in an increased loss of abdominal fat.

There are some possible reasons why Vitamin D is beneficial for weight loss. Vitamin D has been shown to help lower blood sugar and improve insulin resistance- a common causation of fat gain.

In addition, Vitamin D also serves to help reduce inflammation in the body and this is beneficial for overall health and improving body composition.

Chances are YOU are Vitamin D Deficient

Testing for Vitamin D levels is simple but it does require a blood test. Most people are in the range of 25 ng/mL but you should work to bring this up to between 50 and 80 ng/mL. Those of us living in the North are more susceptible to low levels than our Southern neighbors but you should get tested regardless of where you live.

Generally it takes about 15 minutes of exposure to the sun to make about 20,000 units of Vitamin D. The efficiency of this production reduces with age and by age 35 supplementation is generally required. I usually recommend between 1,000 and 5,000 units per day and possibly more during the winter months.

Increasing your Vitamin D intake from food is also possible. The best sources are salmon, halibut, herring, tuna, mackerel, oysters and shrimp. Shitake mushrooms are also a good source but unless you are eating these foods daily and in sufficient amounts you will have to use a supplement.

Is there any downside to supplementing with Vitamin D? Not really, infact Vitamin D is inexpensive and non-toxic at the levels discussed (toxicity would require taking upwards of 40,000 iu’s per day). If you did take too much Vitamin D3 side effects would include; upset stomach, increased thirst and urination, dry mouth, dizziness and possibly a metallic taste in your mouth.

Vitamin-D3 is also essential for bone health since it helps in the calcium and magnesium absorption. ^
