Chocolate- good for fat loss and Mr Happy

Even though I grew up in Winterpeg I have to say I absolutely despise winter and this year has been particularly painful.

All of this wind, cold and endless snow began to take its toll on my psyche so my wife and I decided to take a trip to one of my favorite places in the world- Hawaii.

Hawaii is awesome- especially if you are like me and like to hike to remote beaches while enjoying some of the best scenery this planet has to offer.

However, travelling to Hawaii has one significant drawback- it’s a heck of a far way to travel and this can present some significant challenges if you are trying to adhere to a healthy eating schedule.

If you have spent any time travelling you know what I mean- airplane food choices generally consist of high carb/refined sugar options and there is little by way of good quality protein and healthy fats. This then creates the need to bring along your own food if you don’t want to indulge in the foods they have to offer.

This past trip I brought along the following;

Turkey jerky

Raw nuts and seeds

Fuji apples

Dark chocolate (90% cocoa)

After years of travel I have found these selections to be the most palatable and convenient. In the past I used to bring protein powder and a shaker bottle but after one unfortunate mishap involving a loose lid and a white shirt I have since abandoned any options that required mixing or shaking of any kind.

Let’s take a closer look at the foods listed above. First we have turkey jerky. This is one of my favorite sources of protein. It is lean and depending on the brand you buy it can also taste fantastic. I prefer a brand called “Krave”. It isn’t perfect but it tastes a whole lot better than some of the other options (that taste more like shoe leather).

Raw nuts and seeds are also a perennial fave due to their palatability and the energy they provide. However, one must exercise restraint with these as they are quite calorie dense and are easy to over consume.

Fuji apples are also always in my carry on due to their great taste and excellent nutrition (with minimal calories). Any apple will do (I just love Fuji’s) but just be sure to choose organic since you are eating the skin (at least I hope you are as it contains many fantastic nutrient including ursolic acid that has been shown to help increase muscle mass (1).

Last and most certainly not least (and the reason for the title of this post) we have the ever popular chocolate. I have to admit- I have become somewhat of a chocolate connoisseur as of late. In fact, not a day goes by where I don’t consume at least ½ of a bar of 90% dark chocolate.

The reason is quite simple- I love this stuff!  In addition, dark chocolate is rich in flavanols that help protect against vascular dysfunction and oxidative stress PLUS dark chocolate also improves insulin sensitivity and nitric oxide production (2).

Now here is the deal with nitric oxide- it helps to dilate blood vessels and improve blood flow and this is important for helping to mobilize fatty acids. In fact, this is the same thing that Viagra works to increase for obvious results. I am not sure if cocoa is a natural cure for ED but I do get pretty happy after eating my chocolate!

I hope this helps you plan ahead for your future travels. You can also use this approach for healthy snacking when at work. Let me know if you have questions or comments below. I have also included this short video my wife shot of me being goofing off on a gorgeous black sand beach in Hawaii (and this was after eating several bars of dark chocolate!)
