Weight loss is a VERY popular topic.

According to Google, each month more than 11 MILLION people around the world search for something using that term with Google serving up more than 500,000,000 search results!

In addition to all that content there are countless books on “weight loss” plus an endless array of supplements and gadgets all aimed at those two simple words.

However, personally I couldn’t really give a crap about weight loss.

What was that you say? Aren’t I the guy who wrote a diet book and who can be seen going on about exercise, nutrition and the like?

Yep, that’s me.

But before you think I am some kind of hypocrite please hear me out.

I may not care much about WEIGHT loss but I do care very much about FAT loss and yes, there IS a difference.

When you step on a scale you are seeing the sum total of ALL of your body mass including water weight, bone, blood volume, waste products, muscle mass, skin and other tissue, gas (more for some than for others) AND body fat.

If this is so then why do we think that every fluctuation in scale weight is a change in body fat?

It isn’t and you shouldn’t.

But there is a better way!

Personally, I don’t care how much I weigh. I simply go by my waist circumference, the way I look and my percent body fat.

Same goes for my clients- to tell you the truth I am not that concerned with their weight but I am very concerned about their body composition, strength, energy levels, health and feelings of well being!

Who has the right to tell you that you should weigh a particular weight in order to “feel good about yourself” or to be “healthy”?

The truth is that your body composition (percent body fat) is a far better indication of your overall health than a scale will ever be.

The problem is that testing your body fat is not always easy. Some devices (such as those body fat scales) provide wildly varying results and other testing methods (such as using skin fold calipers) requires a skilled tester with lots of experience.

One method you can use is by way of calculating percent body fat using measurements. It is really simple- just plug your measurements into the fields and off you go.

The results are not perfect but you will get a rough idea of where you stand.

  2. A simple look will tell you that the ideal body fat percentage for a male is much lower than what it is for a female. This has a lot to do with the fact that women are the ones that carry children but there certainly is nothing wrong with a woman having a lower body fat percentage than what is considered to be ideal.

    When you eat less than you “burn”, your body turns fats back into energy. But our bodies try to protect the fat, since it’ is supposed to be saved for lean times, so it can be difficult to loose fats. But keep at it, dedication will win. Just burn more than you eat… either exercise a lot more or exercise a little more and eat less.:
